I have had people ask me the same question over and over for years sometimes.
I've had people take a course and watch the video and still not really get it.
I'd ask them to go and read the text that I provide in most of my courses and they'll say, "ok" and then they'll never read it.
I have people who are in courses now and refuse to read the curriculum even though I know that they could make thousands, even hundreds of thousands and maybe even millions of dollars...
... yet they won't read the material.
Even though this is not a popular subject I have to dive into it.
This is really that important.
So let me sip my coffee....
In today’s fast-paced world, where information is at our fingertips, we often find ourselves turning to videos, podcasts, and quick courses to learn and grow.
I know, I do it myself.
The appeal is clear: videos are convenient, easily digestible, and fast.
But there’s a catch.
While videos can be a great tool for quick learning, they often fail to offer the depth needed to truly transform us.
When it comes to lasting success, especially in business, one thing remains true: deep reading makes all the difference.
While videos can provide useful overviews, deep reading is the key to changing behavior, developing a disciplined mindset, and cultivating the kind of success that lasts.
The Power of Deep Reading!
When you read deeply, you engage with the material in a way that’s not possible through video.
Your brain has to work harder to process, reflect, and apply the information, leading to stronger retention.
Deep reading doesn’t just fill your head with facts, it transforms the way you think.
Books require time, patience, and focus—three things that are vital for building long-term success.
You aren’t just skimming the surface; you’re diving into ideas, reflecting on them, and figuring out how to apply them to your own life.
This kind of mental engagement is what leads to sustainable behavior changes.
Deep reading also strengthens your critical thinking skills. It forces you to analyze, critique, and form your own conclusions.
On the flip side, videos give you ideas in a way that makes it easy to passively consume them, but not necessarily internalize them.
The differences in how our brains work when we read vs. watch can’t be overstated.
Video Isn’t Enough
Some will not want to hear that.
The problem with videos, especially the quick, short content that is so popular today, is that they are inherently passive.
They don't really compel you to take action.
While watching a video, our brains aren’t forced to engage as deeply as they are when reading.
This passive consumption doesn’t lead to the same level of retention or behavior change.
You can watch hundreds of hours of video content, but if you aren’t actively reflecting and applying the material, it’s unlikely to create lasting transformation.
In business, taking shortcuts is a sure way to hinder progress.
It’s very tempting to go for the “quick fix,” but success doesn’t come from cutting corners. Real growth comes from investing time and energy into understanding concepts deeply.
The result is a sharper, more focused mindset and a stronger ability to apply lessons to real-world challenges.
The Role of Specific Types of Reading
Not all reading is created equal. To get the most from your reading, it’s important to focus on the right types of books:
- Biographies: Reading about the lives of successful people gives you more than just a list of achievements. It shows you how they think, the challenges they faced, and how they overcame them. This insight into their mindset is invaluable for anyone looking to succeed in business or life.
- Case Studies: Business case studies offer real-world applications of strategies. They reveal not just what worked, but why it worked (or didn’t). This is crucial for understanding how to navigate your own business challenges and refine your strategies.
- Industry-Related Books: Reading books specific to your field keeps you up to date on trends, strategies, and best practices. These books provide cutting-edge knowledge that you can apply to stay ahead of the curve. They also expand your understanding of the larger landscape in which your business operates.
The Impact on Behavior
When you invest in deep reading, you aren’t just learning facts, you’re shifting your mindset.
A reader’s mindset is one of continuous growth, strategic thinking, and long-term focus. This mindset is what helps you keep going when challenges arise and allows you to find creative solutions when others give up.
Deep reading also encourages the habit of constant improvement. It nurtures the discipline to keep learning, refining your skills, and applying what you’ve learned.
These habits are the foundation of success in any endeavor, but especially in business, where ongoing learning and adaptation are key to staying competitive.
My Final Thought
I deliberately made this weeks newsletter a little lengthy and meaty to read.
Why?
If you’re serious about success, it’s time to move beyond the quick-hit content of videos and commit to deep reading.
It’s not necessarily about reading more books, it’s about reading the right books, engaging with the material, and using what you learn to improve yourself and your business.
Set aside time each day for reading. Start with a chapter or a specific lesson a day.
You can also commit to finishing one book each month.
The knowledge you gain will be far more valuable than any video course or quick tutorial. Because at the end of the day, real growth takes time, and there are no shortcuts to success.
